On
February 3, 2003, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals granted a
stay pending appeal of a preliminary injunction order entered by
the District Court in Baltimore that required Microsoft to
distribute Sun's Java runtime environment (JRE) with the Microsoft®
Windows® XP operating system and to halt "separate"
distribution of the Microsoft virtual machine (Microsoft VM). The
Microsoft Java Virtual Machine is no longer available from
Microsoft directly due to legal wrangling with SUN, however it
still can be downloaded...

Security Update, March 4, 2002
This update resolves the "Java Applet Can Redirect Browser
Traffic" security vulnerability in the Microsoft java virtual
machine (Microsoft VM) on Windows, and is discussed in Microsoft
Security Bulletin MS02-013. Download now to prevent a maliciously
crafted Java program ("applet") from silently re-routing all
browser traffic to the applet's host without the user's knowledge.

One more way to get Microsoft VM
First go to this site and get the
older version of the MS Java Virtual Machine:
http://www.mvision.mpsnet.com/java.htm
This will check for the basic VM
and install an older version onto XP, and then you need to go to
Microsoft and install the Java 4.0 SDK which will give you the
newer base java components. You can get those from this link:
Microsoft SDK for Java 4.0 for Windows 95/98, Windows Me,
Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, and Windows XP or later:
Once you have this installed and
have re-booted your machine, then you need to go to the MS update
site and install all the updates you do not currently have. The
link to MS' site is:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
When the updates are complete,
you will need to re-boot one more time. After re-booting you will
have the most current available Java for XP.
Sun Java
Virtual Machine (JVM)
Microsoft had to take down their
virtual machine because of some legal issues. But you don't even
have to use the Microsoft VM, you can use Sun Microsystem's
version, and it seems to work just fine.
Download and Install the Sun JVM
There are two ways to get Sun's
JVM: Automatic and Manual Download.
Automatic Download and
Installation (for Windows XP, Me, NT, 2000, or 98 and Internet
Explorer)
Click to begin:
Download Now
First, our system will check to see if automatic install works on
your computer...
Manual Download and Installation
Advanced users may want to
download a local copy of the installer from Sun developer Web site
to run at a later time or install on other machines. The manual
download is referred to as the Java 2 Runtime Environment (JRE).
- Go to the Java 2 Platform,
Java
Virtual Machine Download Page.
- Find your operating system in
the first column.
- Click the DOWNLOAD link in the
JRE column.
Note: The Java Runtime Environment (JRE) installs the Sun
JVM.
- Read the license and click
ACCEPT at the bottom.
- Click the Download j2re...
link on the download page.
Note: Select Save this program to disk on the dialog that
appears and choose an easy-to-remember place, such as the
Desktop or My Documents folder to save the file.
- Wait for the download to
complete.
- Double-click the installer
file in the place you saved it and follow the on-screen
instructions, which are virtually identical to steps 4-9 of
automatic installation.
